South Africa's construction and property sectors have a critical role to play in the country's transformation agenda. As a BBBEE Level 1 contributor, JS and Associates is committed to being part of that change.
The South African construction and property sectors are among the most important contributors to economic growth and social development in our country. They create jobs, build infrastructure and shape the physical environment in which people live and work.
They are also sectors that have historically been dominated by a narrow demographic - and that needs to change.
The Case for Transformation
Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) is not simply a compliance exercise. It is a framework for addressing deep structural inequalities in our economy - inequalities that, if left unaddressed, will constrain growth, undermine social cohesion and hold our country back.
In professional services firms like quantity surveyors, transformation starts with ownership, management and skills development. Who owns the practice? Who leads it? Who is being trained and mentored to become the next generation of professionals?
Our Commitment
At JS and Associates Quantity Surveyors, we are proud to be a Level 1 BBBEE contributor and a women-owned professional practice. This is not a marketing position - it is a reflection of who we are and how we have chosen to build our business.
When Fikile Zulu joined Laura Jansen as co-director and shareholder in 2022, it was a milestone that speaks to everything we believe in: the value of diverse perspectives, the importance of developing and promoting talented professionals from all backgrounds, and the conviction that a more representative profession is a stronger profession.
Mentorship as Transformation
One of the most direct ways that professional firms can contribute to transformation is through mentorship. The path to professional registration as a quantity surveyor is long - a degree, a period of structured training under a registered professional, and a rigorous assessment process.
JS and Associates is committed to playing an active role in that journey for newly qualified surveyors. Mentorship is not a side activity for us - it is part of our purpose.
Fikile is herself completing her training towards full professional registration with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP), a milestone she expects to achieve in 2026. Her journey is an inspiration to younger professionals in our sector.
What This Means for Our Clients
For clients who are subject to BBBEE compliance requirements - listed companies, government entities and many large corporates - appointing a Level 1 BBBEE contributor to your professional team contributes meaningfully to your own scorecard.
But beyond the scorecard, working with a diverse, transformation-aligned team simply makes good business sense. Diverse teams bring broader perspectives, more creative problem-solving and a deeper understanding of the full range of clients, stakeholders and communities that South African construction projects touch.
